Pantanello

History

The Pantanello Park is the result of a complex and articulated intervention of naturalistic engineering that has allowed the conversion of a farm (in activity until 1995) into a wetland of considerable environmental and conservation value.

Habitats

The Pantanello Natural Park is located inside the Natural Monument “Giardino di Ninfa”, established by the Lazio Region in 2000 and has a surface of about 100 hectares. The Natural Monument falls entirely within the municipality of Cisterna di Latina (LT). The wetlands, which cover an area of about 12 hectares, consist of ponds, marshes and swampy environments, wet meadows and small streams, and are characterised by different ecological values. The five ponds are between 0.20 and 1.20 metres deep and occupy a total of 11 hectares; three wooded nuclei, clearings and uncultivated land complete the environmental mosaic of the area. More than 100 bird species have been recorded, including the rare Ferruginous Duck, Purple Heron, Short-toed Eagle and Marsh Harrier.

Services and facilities

The Lipu Pantanello Oasis is equipped with a Visitor Centre with a projection room, a nature trail with educational panels and some bird observation huts that are also accessible to the disabled. Various events are organised throughout the year: the release of birds of prey, study and work camps, and night-time outings to listen to bird songs.

Invitation to visit

The Oasis is open to the public from October to March every Sunday with a guided tour at 10 a.m. It is however possible to visit the Oasis every day by booking in advance by contacting Lipu Latina at info@lipulatina.it. School visits take place from October to May, always with prior booking.

To visit in the area

The garden of Ninfa and the abbey of Valvisciolo with its beautiful cloister are worth more than just a visit, as are the historic centre and the Caetani Castle in Sermoneta. About 25 kilometres away, the Cistercian Abbey of Fossanova and the medieval village of the same name with the House of St Thomas Aquinas complete an incredible historical-religious itinerary.
