Black-eared
Wheatear
(Oenanthe
hispanica)
There is a monastery
at Ipsalou on Lesvos which is worth visiting both for its own sake and
for the birdlife it holds. We found Rock Thrush (Monticola
saxatilis) and Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia) nesting in
the walls, the thrush in a cavity and the sparrow in an old nest of a
Rock Nuthatch ( Sitta neumayer).
Outside the monastery was this male
Black-eared Wheatear carrying food for its young. Rather than give away
the position of the nest this bird and its mate stood with their prey
until we had photographed them, and moved on to leave them to the task
of bringing up their nestlings. |
