On a visit to the south of France in 1998 we visited the Camargue and were slightly disappointed in the main lagoon the Etang de Vaccares as we thought it crowded and polluted - but still the place to see Flamingoes! In the inland areas, however, we found some wonderful birds and along this stretch of canal we saw five species of heron and four of tern. This Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) sat while I crept up in the car and using it as a hide made this picture.
