On a visit to the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast in 1994 I was amazed at the ease with which I could approach the numerous Arctic Terns which were starting to nest there. It was early in the season so there was no aggressive dive-bombing to drive away intruders just a curious look to see who or what was visiting. This Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) was quite happy to be pictured standing atop a stone wall to give a picture with very restricted tonal range.
