Habitat

A large and hilly wooded area, marked by the presence of what are known locally as the "sassi", here a group of slender rock needles, and which are in stark contrast with the surrounding typical Appenine landscape.

Birds

But the main characters in the reserve are the birds, especially raptors. The Peregrine Falcon dominates the skies above the reserve and is lord of the rock slopes. It takes its prey in full flight, in high speed dives. There are also Common Buzzards and elusive Sparrowhawks, and at night, Tawny Owls and Barn Owls.

Other wildlife

The vegetation in the reserve is typical of the Appenine area, deciduous oak woods, as well as chestnuts and, in drier parts, dense bushes. The richness and diversity of the woods are favourable conditions for many species including the elusive badger and, in damp rocky parts, the timid crested newt.
There is a visitor centre in the village of Rocca di Sotto, at the foot of the Sassi, and a nature trail with several descriptive panels and a hide, from which to observe Peregrines and other raptors.
