Birds
- Maudoc Birding is run from Italy by Maurizio Sighele - a super site.
- Back in the UK, do visit the award winning "Birds in a Cheshire Garden" - it just reminds me of how sketchy is my knowledge of web design.
- My county wildlife trust (Lincolnshire) has its own site at LWT.
- Birds and Birding Hotspots around the World is brilliantly done on this ambitious site. Tina MacDonald runs it from Edmonton, Alberta and it's really good, a high quality site which gets better and better... Visit and enjoy it!
- Another excellent site, this time based in the UK, is FatBirder which is run by Bo Beolens.
- The Royal Air Force Ornithological Society is such a mouthful we always speak of RAFOS and I've been a member for ten years now and taken part in expeditions to Scotland. Two were to the Highlands doing survey work for the BTO and another to Dumfries & Galloway working for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust - W&WT at Slimbridge. I also had the privilege to lead an expedition to Hungary in 1994 in support of the BirdLife Partner in Hungary - MME, - we were working to help Great Bustards (Otis tarda).
- Another country I have been lucky enough to visit is Norway and I visited the far north of that beautiful country with my daughter in 1996. Visit this site for the birds of the Varanger fjord.
Conservation
- LIPU - Lega Italiana Protezzione Uccelli is a large part of my life and is explained elsewhere in this site. However, we in LIPU-UK, the British branch, have many supporters and helpers and here is a chance to find out more about them. In 1999 CT Distribution of Milton Keynes supplied us with two excellent Manfrotto tripods for use by the anti-poaching camp on the Straits of Messina.
- Another supporting company committed to bird protection is Subbuteo Natural History Books which is now based in Shrewsbury after the retirement of the founders, Peter and Marie Rathbone.
- David Woodhouse lives in Tobermory, on the Scottish island of Mull, and, from the Ulva House Hotel, he offers one day wildlife expeditions in his Land Rover - a must for anyone in the area.
Italian links
I'm frequently asked for details of where to go and what birds to see in Italy, so here are a few good links:
- For Italian Parks and nature Reserves (Oasi).
- Eurobirdnet Italy.
LIPU Reserves and Recovery Centres
- LIPU Reserve Massacciuccoli - excellent photographs.
- In Rome there is a Recovery Centre for injured animals, it is run by LIPU and is in both English and Italian.
- Near Pontevecchio Magenta in the province of Milan, is the Wild Fauna Rescue Centre, "La Fagiana", another centre run by LIPU and, again, the site is in English as well as Italian.
LIPU Sections or Branches
- Roma Coastal Branch of LIPU and a guide to Roman Villas - for the visitor to Rome and what birds to expect there.
Photography
- The Hubble Space Telescope ( HST) seems to send back ever more spectacular images, look at the one of the planet Saturn in the archives...
- A US West Coast site dedicated to showing bird photographs, it is centred on Seattle.
Software
- There are many sites offering reviews and download of software - I think this is one of the best - Beverley Hills Software.
- I use Windows NT which comes without a fax program. I like MightyFax much better than the Microsoft offering and rate is as good, well-written, software.
Misc
- Lincolnshire is my present home and a good way is finding out what is happening in the county is through this site.
